Velma Maria Lopez

Velma Maria Lopez of South Lake Tahoe died Sept. 16, 2005. She was 88.

Born Velma Maria Doyle on Dec. 9, 1916, in Cripple Creek, Colo., she married the love of her life, Lawrence “Larry” Lopez of Sacramento, on Oct. 28, 1937, in Reno.

The couple moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1962 and were married nearly 68 years.

She enjoyed gardening and camping and spent time working in her husband’s real estate companies in the Bay Area and in South Lake Tahoe. She was a volunteer for the Barton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She fought a lifelong battle with polio and epilepsy. In her later years Mrs. Lopez collected angels, which adorn the Lopez residence.

She is survived by her husband Lawrence “Larry” Lopez of South Lake Tahoe; nephews Richard Doyle of Arbuckle, Calif., and George Doyle of Citrus Heights, Calif., nieces Charlotte Doty of Anchorage, Alaska, and Eleanor Doyle of Grants Pass, Ore. She was predeceased by brothers Lionel, Thomas and Donald Doyle.

A memorial service will be Friday at the McFarlane Mortuary Chapel, 887 Emerald Bay Road, South Lake Tahoe, at 5 p.m.
