Video on depression May 13

Tahoe Daily Tribune

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill will present a video on depression from the personal perspective of the late academy award winning actor Rod Steiger. The video will be shown at 6 p.m. May 13 at the Lake Tahoe Branch Library, 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd. There is no charge to attend.

The community is invited to come and discuss the topic. Understanding depression can help people heal faster and help those who are suffering from it seek help quicker. People who are suffering from depression can understand it isn’t their fault and discussing the issue helps people fight the stigma that is involved.

Major depression affects 9.9 million American adults or approximate 5 percent of the adult population in a given year. As many as one in every 33 children one in eight adolescents may have depression and the commonly believed myth that depression comes naturally with old age is not true.
