Vikings advance to final of Spanish Springs tournament

A modest two-game winning streak has paid major dividends to the South Tahoe High baseball.

The Vikings followed a 4-2 win a against Elko on Thursday morning with a 14-11 upset of Central Valley of Redding, Calif., on Thursday afternoon at the Spanish Springs tournament.

The wins propelled the Vikings into the Friday’s championship game against host Spanish Springs, the third-ranked team in the latest Sierra Nevada Sports Media Poll. First pitch is at 4 p.m.

“We can’t wait,” said STHS skipper Don Amaral. “We hit the ball well today.”

South Tahoe (6-14) built a 12-3 lead against Central Valley, then survived an eight-run fifth inning. The Vikings responded with two runs in their fifth to complete the scoring.

Jamie Yelles drove home four runs with a two-run triple and two-run double. Connor Casey, Max DeLallo and Ricky Braun also contributed two hits – the latter two combining for five RBI. The Vikings stole six bases, and Matt Blank gave the Vikings 4 1/3 innings of six-hit pitching.
