Vikings beat Lakers in double header
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The South Tahoe Vikings baseball team took both games of a double header from the North Tahoe Lakers Wednesday afternoon at Governors Field in Carson City.
The pair of wins improved the Vikings Mount Rose League record to 3-0 and their overall record to 4-3.
The first game was a slugfest, an 18-8 South Tahoe victory that ended after five innings because of the 10 run rule. The second game was a pitchers duel, with the Vikings prevailing 4-2.
In game No. 1 the Viking offense knocked out 15 hits, featuring a two-run home run from junior Jake Braun. Big innings were the difference as South Tahoe scored seven runs in the second, six in the third, and five in the fifth. Braun was 2-4 including the dinger and finished with four RBIs. Sophomore Cody Higgins went 3-3 with a triple and 2 RBI. Seniors Jamie Yelles and Andrew Contaxis both had RBI triples and junior Bobby Oakes went 2-3. Senior leadoff hitter Rigel Garman had a triple, two stolen bases, and scored three times. Junior Joey Wightman was the winning pitcher and struck out four. Sophomore Tyler Sharp came on in relief and fanned six Laker hitters.
Game No. 2 featured strong pitching from both squads. South Tahoe hurler Andrew Contaxis logged the win, giving up just three hits and striking out four hitters in five innings of work. Once again, Sharp came on in relief. Sharp got the save, pitching two innings, striking out two, and did not give up a hit.
The tense ball game came down to a decisive fifth inning. With the score knotted at 2-2, South Tahoe freshman Derek Clelan led off the inning with a single. Bobby Oakes then reached on a Laker error as Clelan advanced to third. On the next pitch Oakes took off for second base. When the North Tahoe catcher threw to second, Clelan broke for home and beat the return throw for the go ahead run. Rigel Garman would later double and score in the inning to give the Vikings a two run lead that would hold up.
South Tahoe travels to Dayton this Friday for a matchup with the unbeaten Dust Devils. The Vikings will then play both Churchill County High School and Fernley High School in Fallon on Saturday.
Fans can also catch the Vikings in action April 6 at the Reno Aces Ballpark. They will be playing the Truckee Wolverines. Game time is 4 p.m., and admission is free.
The South Tahoe JV traveled to Hug High and played the Hawks varsity squad, losing 8-4. Kyle Rossi had a 2-RBI double, and Bobby Gonzales went 2-4.
