Vikings capture three wrestling titles in Sparks

Steve Yingling, Tribune sports editor

Three South Tahoe High wrestlers won titles at the Sparks Invitational on Saturday. Sophomore Tyler Nesbitt picked up the first tournament championship of his career, winning all three of his 145-pound matches. One of his wins was in six seconds – something coach Ken Robbins had never seen in his wrestling career.

“I’ve seen it done it seven seconds and eight seconds,” Robbins said of Nesbitt, who used a leg takedown to execute the quick pin. Cameron Cason (119) and Jose Silva (215) also claimed tournament titles with 3-0 and 2-0 records, respectively.

Also for the Vikings, Cody Shindelbower finished third (2-1) in the 112-pound class; Ian Fonken was fourth (2-2) at 135; and Brian Hogan (1-1) took second at 152.

“The brackets were kind of small, but for the younger guys it was nice to go to a tournament like that and get some confidence going,” Robbins said. “Confidence going into a tough week is never a bad thing.”

In their previous Sierra League dual, a 42-30 loss to Galena, Cason (1:00) and Fonken (4:52) won matches by fall. STHS is scheduled for a dual Wednesday night at Fallon and the Alhambra tournament on Saturday.
