Vikings cruise to division-opening victory

Cassandra Diaz scored a first-half hat trick, and the South Tahoe Vikings scored all seven of their goals before intermission en route to a 7-0 Sierra Division-opening girls’ soccer win against Wooster on Saturday in South Lake Tahoe.

Shelbi Spicer scored twice as the Vikings won for the second time at the Community Youth Sports Complex in as many games. Marisol Lizaola and freshman Brooke King also found the net for the Vikings.

Lizaola led the Vikings with two assists, while Natalie Flynn, Alexis Arens, Maddie Bowman and Gabby Yanez, delivered assists.

“Before the game we talked about we needed to come out and have a fast start to the league season, and the girls did exactly that,” said STHS coach Clint Lockhart. “We took what we’ve been working on in practice the last week and executed it.”

Leading a stout defensive effort by the Vikings were Ashley Killeen, Erika Cook, Stephany Campazano, Willow Nelson, Janet Campazano and “Mickey” Segers.

Earlier this season, South Tahoe defeated Wooster 5-0 at the Galena tournament.

South Tahoe (6-0), ranked third in the latest Sierra Nevada Media Group Poll, plays host to Bishop Manogue on Tuesday.

The STHS junior varsity also rolled to victory Saturday, winning 6-1. Brittany Sanchez scored twice, while Annie Kate Genasci, Alli Bannar, Alyssa Lowe and Alisa Caro each scored a goal.
