SPOONER LAKE – There was an extra edge to South Tahoe High’s home cross country race on Friday at Spooner Lake State Park.

Several downhill sections in the Spooner Lake Freestyle, particularly one, made some of the competitors wish they had brought their downhill skis.

“A couple of times I had to slow down,” said STHS racer Christy Walowit. “A lot of it depends on the weather. All of the courses have downhills, so it just depends on what the weather is that day.”

The fast course didn’t slow down the steely-nerved South Tahoe racers as four Vikings placed 13th or higher. Kyle Swain led the Vikings in fifth place at 18 minutes, 43 seconds. STHS’s Tyler Myers took seventh place (18:52), Erik Cramer was eighth (18:55) and Harley Norton 13th (19:53).

“This is my third year, and I haven’t had a race here,” said STHS senior Erik Cramer. “It was fun to have a course that we sort of know.”

Cramer and Myers are typically the Vikings’ only male varsity racers.

“It’s a lot more intense because we are going against kids who have been doing it for their whole lives,” Cramer said.

North Tahoe racers claimed the top-two spots as Peter Holmes recorded a winning time of 17:39 and Shane Christian was runner-up at 18:08. Nevada Union’s Joe Rodriguez was third at 18:30.

Also making it through the swift groomed course were Chas Carlson in 23rd place and Leighton Cook in 28th.

Truckee’s Annika Deurlington was the top female racer, finishing the two-loop course in 19:5. Incline’s Melanie Swick was second in 19:55 and North Tahoe’s Emily Nall placed third in 20:53.

South Tahoe’s Lisa Johnston came in sixth at 21:58 and Tiffany Racz was 11th in 23:05.

Three of their South Tahoe teammates also skied into the top 20: Janelle Spandau was 13th (23:28), Walowit 16th (24:07) and Madeline Dant 19th (24:56).

Other STHS results were Kate Carlson 22nd, Molly Dant 23rd and Liana Novak 24th.

Alder Creek’s Hannah Halvorsen won the middle school girls’ race in 10:06.74. South Tahoe Middle School’s Tatum Whatford was 16th in 12:07.21.

North Tahoe’s Dylan Syben won the middle school boys’ race in 9:10.14. A.J. Marino of STMS was 14th and Nick Cefalu 17th in 11:22.68.

The next event is the Mammoth Classic on Friday.
