Vikings’ home opener delayed again

South Tahoe High girls’ basketball players can predict when the Tahoe Basin is going to receive a decent snowstorm: right around their home opener, of course.

The Vikings’ home opener against Dayton was postponed on Monday because the area received its first double-digit snowfall of the season on Sunday night and into Monday morning. The substantial storm canceled Lake Tahoe Unified School District classes, and when that happens, teams aren’t permitted to practice or play games.

South Tahoe senior Alexis Holmes doesn’t remember having a home opener at the earliest date during her entire high school basketball career.

“I wasn’t surprised when it started snowing last night. I told my dad before I went to bed that I wasn’t bothering to set my alarm for the morning,” Holmes said.

Last year, the weather delayed the Vikings’ home opener until Jan. 8.

“We’re all bummed that we didn’t get to play today,” Holmes said. “It would have been a good matchup to see where we stand because Dayton has already played Carson.”

The Vikings also wanted to pay back the Dust Devils for an overtime defeat last season.

If the weather cooperates, the Vikings’ next chance at a home opener is Dec. 15 against Carson. The matchup also is South Tahoe’s first Sierra Division game.

South Tahoe (1-0) is scheduled to play in the three-day Spanish Springs tournament starting on Thursday.
