Vikings’ home track meet called off

Steve Yingling, Tribune sports editor

South Tahoe High’s only home track and field meet has been canceled.

The Sierra Challenge, which was scheduled for Saturday at the Community Youth Sports Complex, has been called off because of a lack of interest from other schools.

“Many schools said they were coming. Reno even signed up, then pulled out (Monday),” said STHS coach Melissa Berry. “I am extremely disappointed about this, but the schools claim that the threat of bad weather had made the decision for them.”

Berry’s team has been confined to the school’s gymnasium for practice for most of the season, and the CYSC track has been uncovered and recovered by snow several times during the season.

“We have had a disappointing spring at best as far as weather is concerned. It has been the most volatile, erratic weather I have experienced in the nine years I have coached the track team,” Berry said.

South Tahoe competed at the Big George Invitational on Saturday with distance runner Shelby McIntyre winning the 3,200 and 1,600 meters and Blair Berry taking third in the long jump and high jump.
