Vikings make Howell Memorial tournament semifinals
August 30, 2009
Douglas High prevented South Tahoe from making a familiar appearance in the Howell Memorial soccer tournament finals on Saturday in Reno.
The Tigers held off the Vikings 2-1 in a girls’ tournament semifinal game at the South Valley Sports Complex.
Douglas led 2-0 at the half, but 5 minutes into the second half Becky Bruce scored a goal on an assist from Shelbi Spicer. The Vikings had several chances to tie the game but couldn’t finish their shots.
Earlier in the day, Spicer scored the Vikings’ lone goal in a 1-0 win over McQueen. Ali Palacios, who had three goals in a 5-0 win over Wooster on Friday, assisted on the goal.
“All in all, it was a great weekend,” said STHS coach Clint Lockhart. “We got to see a lot of girls play different positions, and we learned a lot about ourselves as a team.”
South Tahoe (3-1) will play its home opener against Hug at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. For more details on the Howell Memorial tournament and results of the Vikings’ home opener, pick up midweek issue of the Tahoe Daily Tribune.
