Vikings’ Murphy wins 3A golf event
South Tahoe High junior golfer Morgan Murphy didn’t waste any time introducing herself to the school’s new 3A league competitors on Friday.
Morgan fired an 80 to take medalist honors out of nine high schools in attendance at Genoa Lakes Resort Course. She was seven strokes better than runner-up Maria Imchaustin of Dayton.
“She played great and was very excited, as she should be,” said STHS coach Greg Kuntz. “She made some putts on some tricky greens.”
Murphy got off to a fast start, firing a 38 on the opening nine holes on a hot, late-summer day. Senior Morgan McCauley was next for the Vikings with a score of 136 and was followed by Ayden Williams with 157, Katie Sears with 159 and Shelly Leonard with 159. Jessica Robberson scored a 131, but her didn’t count toward the team total because she took a circle 10 on one hole.
As a team, the Vikings placed sixth, with Elko first, Lowry second, Spring Creek third, Fernley fourth and Truckee fifth.
“It was a very positive experience under brutal conditions,” said Kuntz, who reported temperatures in the mid-90s and 150 bottles of water consumed by players and coaches. “Nobody felt like it was the best they could do, and I think all of them want to get back out there and knock off some more shots.”
South Tahoe returns to action Friday in Fallon.
