Vikings ousted in Howell Memorial Tournament semifinals

The past and the future came together for the South Tahoe boys’ soccer team on Saturday in the Howell Memorial Tournament in Reno.

South Tahoe defeated new Mount Rose League foe Incline 3-1 in the final round of pool play, but were eliminated in the tournament’s semifinals by former Sierra Division opponent Galena, 5-2.

Ryan Caro scored twice and Edgar Hernandez tallied a goal in the win against the Highlanders.

STHS coach Hugo Lizaola said the match was “hard fought and a physical game.”

Hernandez collected his sixth goal of the tournament in the loss to Galena. Senior Kory DiGrande also scored for the Vikings.

South Tahoe (3-1) opens league play Thursday at Incline.

The Vikings’ JV boys’ team kicked off its season by winning two of three games at the McQueen tournament. South Tahoe routed McQueen 6-0, lost to Wooster 4-1 and blanked Reno 2-0.

Coach Bill Spicer was pleased with the play of his young team “and “their cohesiveness was very impressive.”

Vikings’ highlights, according to Spicer, were Kris DiGrande and Austin Williams for their offensive play; the defensive work of Ozzie Rosas, Eddie Garibay and David Rodgiguez; and the two shutouts recorded by keeper Kyle Hannah.

The JVs are scheduled to open league play Sept. 9 at North Tahoe.
