Vikings place ninth in Bob Firman Invitational in Boise

South Tahoe High’s boys’ cross country team tied for eighth at the Bob Firman Invitational on Saturday at Eagle State Park in Boise, Idaho.

The Vikings were led by seniors Erich Baumann and Jordan Yingling as they finished 46th and 49th in a 212-runner field. Their times were 17 minutes, 41.93 seconds and 17:45.06, respectively, for the 5-kilometer race.

South Tahoe lost a tie-breaker to Nevada Union for eighth place in the 31-team field. Mountain Crest won the boys’ team title with a five-runner score of 83. STHS had 326 points.

“Those top four guys can run a lot faster,” said STHS coach Dominique Westlake. “They need to start keying on Alex Martinez of Elko. If they start running with him, they are going to turn some heads. There is a lot more potential in each one of these guys. They ran pretty well, but they can run 30 seconds faster.”

Also for the Vikings, Gio Magana placed 87th in 18:37.02, Zildjian Borromeo finished 101st in 18:53.20, Austin Pierce was 137th in 19:19.70 and Justin Dalton came in 171st at 21:13.19.

Elko’s Eric Sandall won the 5K in 16:23.48.

The Vikings will host the South Tahoe Optimist Relays on Friday in Viking Bowl.
