Vikings win a wild opener

It was a season opener unlike any other for the South Tahoe High girls’ basketball team.

South Tahoe fought through three overtimes to beat Spanish Springs 55-52 on Tuesday night in Sparks.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better opener,” said STHS senior Alexis Holmes. “It was just fun. We’ve had a double overtime game and a couple overtime games, but I don’t think we’ve ever had a triple overtime game.”

Alexis Nunes-Fenley sank six late free throws to put away Spanish Springs.

“She came up big,” said South Tahoe coach Chris Holmes. “She hit six free throws down the stretch and had six rebounds in the last two overtimes.

Holmes led the Vikings with 18 points, and Nunes-Fenley had 13.

Coach Holmes said his team was able to execute its transition offense – even after two overtimes.

“We started to outrun them at the end,” Holmes said. “Our transition was still working good. We were getting rebounds and getting it out.”

South Tahoe thought it had executed the winning shot at the end regulation, but the scoreboard buzzer went off as Holmes was breaking away for a layup. The play was disallowed, and the Vikings were required to inbound the ball again.

“It was a wild game,” coach Holmes said. “It made us stronger.”

Despite all of the extra time on the court, the Vikings had only one player foul out – senior Terra Backinger.

The Vikings (1-0) will play Dayton in their home opener on Monday.
