Volunteers sought at historic site

Lynn Bajuk
Special to the Tribune

On the west shore of beautiful Lake Tahoe sits the Tallac Historic Site and Taylor Creek Visitor’s Center that welcomes thousands of visitors each summer. The U.S. Forest Service and Tahoe Heritage Foundation have partnered this year with a vibrant, experienced woman heading up the many volunteers who support the site. Mikan Gosuico came from Sacramento last fall and she is seeking more talent to preserve and protect the cultural heritage and natural history resources of the area. In the Baldwin Museum, docents greet and educate visitors and conduct tours and present living history programs. Volunteers spend hours researching and accessioning articles in the collection. Outside, we garden and maintain lawns, grounds and trails. Preservation, restoration and maintenance of artifacts, buildings and machinery are constant. Skills such as blacksmithing, sewing of costumes and help with the annual Gatsby Festival and Tea are needed. Always, administrative skills are appreciated.

Out-of-town volunteers may come for a five-to-six week session staying at a small RV park nearby. Local volunteers work one or two days each week all summer. The work is rewarding and many make life-long friends. Those interested in becoming a volunteer, contact Mikan at 530-544-7383 or email mikan@tahoeheritagefoundation.org.
