Volunteers will work on bike trails Aug. 17

Gregory Crofton, Tahoe Daily Tribune

Tools, snacks and drinks will be provided for a trail maintenance day on Aug. 17.

The Tahoe Area Mountain Bike Association, and anyone who wants to help, will put its energies into the Valley View trail, which runs from the top of Tahoe Mountain toward Sawmill Pond.

“We try to keep the trails from dishing out,” said Dave Von Derau, a TAMBA member. “What happens is water runs down the middle and causes erosion.”

Trail maintenance also involves “rerouting,” which usually means extending a trail so it becomes less steep and less erosive, VonDeran said.

If you are willing to help, bring work gloves and boots and meet at 10 a.m. on Tahoe Mountain Road, two gates up from Lake Tahoe Boulevard at a parking lot on the right side of road.

A trail expert from the U.S. Forest Service is expected to help with the maintenance work. For more information contact Von Derau at (530) 573-1122.
