Warriors bump off Class 4A Reed

The Whittell High School volleyball team picked up its first home win of the season Friday with a thrilling victory over the 4A’s Reed, 25-15, 24-26, 25-18, 26-28 and 15-12.

“That was the volleyball we’ve been waiting to play all week,” said Whittell coach Tony Fathergill. “Tonight we were fired up and ready to rock. There was incredible energy through the gym.”

Fathergill applauded the play of Lauren Andrew, Austyn Herrera and Isabel Concha-Foley.

“They played a beautiful match of volleyball,” Fathergill said.

The Warriors (9-7) play at North Tahoe on Tuesday in their Northern 2A League opener.

Whittell’s Stone nets 4 goals

Junior Tim Stone scored four goals to lead the Whittell High School boys’ soccer team to a 7-0 rout of Sage Ridge on Friday night.

Stone’s scoring output was three goals shy of the school record of seven set by Nestor Flores. The Warriors did all of their scoring in the first half. Jess Latta, “Axel” Bernardino and Jenner Felton also found the net. For Felton, it was his first varsity goal.

“We played with a young lineup. It was a good game for us,” said Whittell coach Steve Maltase.

The Warriors (6-8-2) play host to Sparks on Thursday.
