Warriors cancel football opener

When Whittell High School opened fall football practice with only nine players there was concern whether the Warriors could generate the numbers to carry through the season.

Until they are able to add a few more players, Whittell first-year coach Jeff Jones has decided to delay its season opener. Whittell canceled the team’s first game Aug. 27 against Sierra Ridge in San Andreas, Calif.

Hence, the Warriors will aim to open their season Sept. 10 vs. Rite of Passage in Zephyr Cove.

Jones worked with 12 players during Friday’s practice, with two missing because of sickness. The Whittell coach expects his roster to expand next week when students start classes and additional players come out for the team.

Players can sign up for the team in the school office, and if they want more information, they can phone Jones at 775-745-0493.
