Warriors finish fourth in Del Campo tournament

Whittell High’s boys’ soccer team finished fourth in the two-day Del Camp tournament that ended on Saturday.

The Warriors finished second in their Division III pool, then lost to Rio Linda 2-0 in the semifinals.

“We played well enough to win all the games, created many opportunities, (but) had trouble scoring,” said Whittell coach Steve Maltase. “We got a lot of confidence by playing well against large-school teams.”

Whittell started the tournament with a 2-1 win against Mira Loma. Trevor Fairbank scored twice on assists by Mark Waite and Garrett Bronken. Fairbank also found the back of the net via an assist by T.J. Kolesnik in a 3-1 defeat to Union Mine. The Warriors finished pool play with a 0-0 tie against Bear River.

The Warriors (5-5-1 overall) begin a key week of league, playing with road matches at North Tahoe on Tuesday and Yerington on Thursday.
