Warriors put on their rally caps again

Late-inning comebacks are becoming the mantra for the Whittell High softball team.

For the second straight day, the Warriors used a seventh-inning rally on Wednesday to beat a nonleague foe. This time, Katie Besson and Megan Miller stole home in the seventh inning to give Whittell a 13-12 victory at Virginia City.

At one point, the Warriors trailed by nine runs. But Whittell scored four times in the fourth and added seven more runs in the sixth to pull within a run, 12-11. Besson’s double and Miller’s single highlighted the sixth-inning uprising. Katie Besson tripled earlier in the game.

Meanwhile, Marissa Besson, Katie’s older sister, retired the Muckers one-two-three in the sixth and seventh innings to preserve the win. She finished with 13 strikeouts.

“It’s a good thing I have a strong heart,” said Whittell coach Rich Barna, whose team improved its overall record to 9-8.

The Warriors are scheduled to resume Northern 2A League action Saturday afternoon at Battle Mountain.
