Warriors rally to beat Quincy
For a slice of the first quarter on Wednesday night the Whittell High Warriors might have been thinking back to their improbable upset of South Tahoe on Tuesday.
After falling behind Quincy 11-1 the Warriors rallied for a 44-35 nonleague boys’ basketball victory in Zephyr Cove.
Quincy (7-7 overall) jumped out to a double-digit lead 5 minutes into the first quarter, but Whittell came back to take a 21-20 halftime lead. Whittell led 28-26 at the break, and the teams exchanged the upperhand several times in the final quarter. Senior Blake Heldt-Werle scored six of Whittell’s final seven points to create some cushion.
“After last night’s game our energy level was low,” said Whittell coach Tyler Rose. “We switched from a man to a zone defense to preserve some energy. We overcame it and battled through.”
Heldt-Werle finished with 14 points, seven rebounds (four offensive) and three assists. Alex Potnick had 12 points, eight boards and three assists, while sophomore Austin Neil pulled down eight rebounds.
The win avenged an overtime loss at Quincy on Saturday night. It was the Warriors’ third game in five days.
Whittell, which won at South Tahoe 36-33 on Tuesday, improved to 5-9 overall. The Warriors play host to Truckee on Friday night and Incline on Saturday afternoon.
In the JV game, Whittell routed Quincy 41-22 behind Derek Heldt-Werle’s 14 points and Patrick Lorio’s 10.
