Warriors register fifth no-hitter

Steve Yingling, Tribune sports editor

The ninth-rated team in the Sierra Nevada Sports Media Poll didn’t let up in midweek baseball games against Smith Valley and Virginia City.

Whittell rattled off a 23-0 drubbing of Smith Valley on Tuesday at Lampe Park, and four pitchers combined to no-hit Virginia City in a 14-0 win on Wednesday in Virginia City.

The no-hitter by Adam Laub, Jordan Morgan, Alex Vogt and Julian Washalefsky was the Warriors’ fifth of the season. It also was the Warriors’ fourth shutout in the past five games.

“We’re showing pitching depth,” said Whittell coach Starbuck Teevan. “Having some extra arms should help keep us fresh down the stretch.”

Against Smith Valley, Alex Potnick and Sam Harris each knocked in three runs. Potnick, Laub and Vogt each supplied two hits. Laub, Morgan and Vogt picked up two RBI apiece.

Following the important save Potnick registered against Lovelock on April 3, he earned the shutout win against Smith Valley.

In the shelling of the Muckers, Morgan led the way with two hits and two RBI. Potnick and Vogt also delivered two hits, and Taylor Weik had a hit and RBI.

The Warriors travel to Battle Mountain on Saturday for a pivotal Northern 2A League doubleheader. Both teams are unbeaten.
