Warriors third in Yerington Invitational

Staff report

The defending state champion Whittell High golf team was the top Lake Tahoe representative and third-overall finisher at the Yerington Invitational on Friday at Eagle Valley East Course in Carson City.

With Whittell four players shooting scores of 83 or better, only Lowry and Spring Creek finished ahead of the Warriors. Michael Koskin, a senior, led Whittell by firing a season-best 77 and junior Trevor Fairbank carded a 78. The top-two Warriors were complemented by scores of 82 by T.J. Kolesnik, 83 by Jake Williams and 87 by Nick Seemack. The Warriors’ sixth man, Alex Szendrey, shot an 88.

“Not too bad, but we can do better than that,” said Whittell coach Steve Maltase. “On that course, a couple of guys should have done a little better. Overall, I’m happy with the team score.

“We just have to continue to improve. We’re getting pretty good results from the bottom half of our lineup.”

Final team scores were Lowry 373, Spring Creek 396, Whittell 407, Incline 416, North Tahoe 420, Dayton 433, Truckee 447, Yerington 471, Fernley 479, Sierra Lutheran 483 and Sparks 557.

The Warriors are scheduled to play Thursday at Dayton Valley.
