Warriors to kick off season Friday night in Zephyr Cove

Steve Yingling / Tahoe Daily TribuneWhittell High's offensive line works on pass blocking during a recent practice in Zephyr Cove.

Whittell High School may be the last team in the state – and perhaps the nation – to open their prep football season.

The Warriors kick off their 2010 season against Rite of Passage at 7 p.m. Friday in Zephyr Cove. Whittell was forced to forfeit its opener on Aug. 27 at Sierra Ridge due to an inadequate number of players and was scheduled for a bye last week.

Jeff Jones will make his Whittell coach debut against the Rams. Jones hasn’t coached at the prep level since 1992. Jones’ offensive schemes are all new to the Whittell program.

In preseason scrimmages against North Tahoe, Incline and Sierra Ridge, Jones’ Warriors were operating Pistol and gun schemes.

Rite of Passage is off to an 0-2 start, having lost to Fernley 52-36 and Yerington 27-8.

Devontay Williams is the Rams’ leading rusher with 294 yards on 29 carries and one touchdown. Williams also is the team’s top receiver with 155 yards and two scores. Deandre Hampton has complemented Williams with 102 rushing yards and two TDs.

Quarterback Johnny Lopez has passed for 219 yards and two touchdowns, while being picked off three times.

The Warriors have qualified for the postseason each of the past two seasons.
