Warriors topple Truckee

The eighth-ranked Whittell High volleyball team upset sixth-rated Truckee en route to a 3-0 record on the first day of the Yerington volleyball tournament on Friday.

Whittell (6-5) outlasted Truckee 25-23, 17-25 and 15-7 to cap their unbeaten first day. In earlier matches, Whittell defeated Silver Stage 25-22 and 25-10 and then rallied to beat Portola 23-25, 25-12 and 15-6.

“We really played disciplined and team-inspired volleyball today,” said Whittell coach Tony Fathergill. “We decided to bring our ‘A’ game, and it showed. I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

The Warriors advanced to the gold bracket and will play in a four-team pool Saturday to determine the semifinalists. Whittell’s first match is at 10 a.m., and the Warriors could play as many as five schools throughout the day. Fourth-ranked Yerington and fifth-rated Douglas are also entered in the tournament.
