GREG FITZSIMMONS

It’s the return of the “Fitz,” having comedian Greg Fitzsimmons as our first week-long comic for the new year. He will perform with Alycia Cooper at the Improv at Harveys.

Greg has a radio show on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM network and a pretty good podcast called “Fitzdog Radio” (one of the most downloaded shows on iTunes). Fitz has great improvisational skills on stage, which explains why he was a regular on “Chelsea Lately.” Greg has written for Louis C.K. on his HBO special, “Lucky Louie,” for “Cedric the Entertainer Presents,” “Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher,” “The Man Show” and a host of others. Greg appeared on ‘The Late Show With David Letterman,” “Conan O’Brien” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” He received positive reviews for his Comedy Central special, and “Idiot Savants” (on MTV) won him a Cable ACE Award for Best Game Show. On the big screen Fitzsimmons has been in “Monumental,” “The Callback” and “Three.”

Greg told me that his humor stems from his mom and his Irish upbringing, so it’s no surprise that Greg would write a book called, “Dear Mrs. Fitzsimmons: Tales of Redemption from an Irish Mailbox,” collected from letters he saved from corresponding with his mom.

Greg also received his fair share of recognition, including four Daytime Emmys he won as a writer and producer on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “The Jury Award for Best Comedian” from The HBO Comedy Arts Festival. Greg spent five years as a panelist on VH1’s “Best Week Ever” and hosted the 25th Annual “AVN Adult Movie Awards” on Showtime.

ALYCIA COOPER

It’s a new year, a new comedian and new possibilities having Alycia Cooper making her debut up here. Even though she’s featuring this week, she’s already headlined may venues across the country. Alycia was a semi-finalist on this past season’s “Last Comic Standing” where Roseanne called her “brilliant.” She also has a YouTube channel under “Alycia Cooper” that you can subscribe to online. Her latest CD, “Alycia with a ‘y’” comes out next month, with her previous CDs available on iTunes.

Alycia has quite the edge to her style of comedy in part because some of her biggest influences are Chris Rock, George Carlin and Margaret Cho. She likes to talk about politics, but has no problem sprinkling in observational humor and family stories to round out the routine. Her brand of universal humor coupled with a razor-sharp wit keeps Alycia at the top of her game.

Alycia’s credits are pretty extensive as well, with a sampling of her television credits including “Byron Allen’s Comics Unleashed,” “America’s Got Talent,” “The Mo’Nique Show,” “The Ricki Lake Show,” “Wanda Does It,” “Gossip Queens,” “Nick’s Mom’s Night Out,” “Stand Up & Deliver” and “Stand Up in Stilettos.” She taped her first DVD in 2002 for a Christian Comedy Show called, “The Spirit of Comedy.” Since then, she taped two hour-long DVDs (directed and produced by herself) called “Paper Chasin’,” “Stimulus Package” and her last CD, “Alycia: Unchained.”

Howie Nave is the MC at the Improv at Harveys. The comedy club is inside Harveys Lake Tahoe. Shows begin at 9 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and tickets are $25 plus fees, except Saturdays. Tickets are $30 on Saturdays. The Improv is dark on Mondays and Tuesdays. Must be 21 or older to attend. More information is available by calling 775-586-6266.
