Water ski boat hits man in kayak

Lauren Halsted, Tahoe Daily Tribune

A man in a kayak was run over by a water ski boat Sunday at around 1 p.m., suffering serious cuts and fractures to his left leg.

Fire officials were not sure exactly where the accident occurred, but the victim was brought to the pier in front of Vikingsholm in Emerald Bay by the boater who ran him over.

The victim received immediate attention from an off-duty firefighter and paramedic from El Dorado Hills, said Brad Jackson, of the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department.

Sunday’s hero was in another boat when he grabbed his first aid kit and hopped into the boat to help the victim, Jackson said.

Police and sheriff rescue boats, City of South Lake Tahoe Engine and Medic 3, State Parks, U.S. Coast Guard, a North Tahoe Medic unit, El Dorado County Sheriff Search and Rescue and Cal Star 6 responded to the call.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was treated at the scene while a landing was cleared for a helicopter at a wide area of beach just south of Vikingsholm, Jackson said.

He was flown to Washoe Medical Center in Reno. His condition has not been released.

These types of accidents are not common on Lake Tahoe. Asked how frequently they occur, Jackson said, “luckily not a lot, but it has happened before.”
