Wear jeans April 28 to support victims’ rights

The South Tahoe Women’s Center is encouraging the community to wear jeans on April 28 in support of Denim Day 2010, a movement that aims to end attitudes that excuse and perpetuate sexual violence.

Denim Day began as part of an international protest following an Italian Supreme Court decision in 1997 to overturn a rape conviction because the victim wore tight jeans. The argument was that tight jeans are difficult to take off, so the victim must have been consenting.

The South Lake Tahoe Women’s Center is at 2941 Lake Tahoe Blvd. The Alpine County Women’s Center is at 290 Old Pony Express Road, Markleeville. Call (530) 544-2118 or visit http://www.sltwc.org.
