Weather forecaster: More of the same

Staff report

Don’t look for any significant changes in the weather – meaning snow – any time soon.

“What you see is what you’ll get for the next week or so,” said Tom Cylke, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Reno.

A ridge of high pressure over the West Coast and low pressure parked over the East Coast is a recipe for continued cool temperatures, dry skies and patchy fog in the South Shore area. Cylke said the weekend could bring partly cloudy skies as a weather system brushes Southern California, “but we’re not looking for any precipitation.”

Patches of fog have been perched above Heavenly Mountain Ski Resort and along Kingsbury Grade this week while the basin has remained relatively clear.

The current type of weather conditions the northern Sierra is experiencing usually run in a 21-day cycle, Cylke said, so it will be another week or two before anything changes. But that doesn’t necessarily mean things will change for the wetter.

The lack of any appreciable rain or snow in December has weather experts comparing the early part of the 2005-06 season to that of the 1995-96 season.

“We had early storms and then dry cold in December, “Cylke said. “We really didn’t get any storms until January.”

The official National Weather Service forecast for this winter doesn’t reveal much to weather watchers. Cylke said temperatures are forecast to be above average with an equal chance of above- or below-average precipitation.
