Weather hits on time for weathermen

Old Man Winter’s timing is uncanny.

Forty-five of the nation’s leading weather experts and television meteorologists will converge on South Shore Wednesday and Thursday for a weather conference and seminar. In the process, 32 television stations will conduct multiple live broadcasts and, in the process, promote Lake Tahoe’s skiing throughout the country.

It’s a good thing several feet of snow have fallen in the past week. The entire winter prior to that had been dryer than normal.

Phil Weidinger, a promoter of the event, said the eighth annual Operation Sierra Storm should help get the word out that Tahoe’s snow is no longer scarce.

“In light of the current weather conditions, compared to earlier in the season, I think this will help show we’re the leading winter destination in the U.S.,” Weidinger said.

The event will be held at Heavenly Ski Resort, and 32 television meteorologists will conduct as many as 80 live broadcasts that will appear in New York, Atlanta, Seattle, Miami, Los Angeles and numerous other cities.

More than 10 area groups help in putting on the event including the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, Tahoe-Douglas Visitors Authority, Zephyr Cove Snowmobile Center, Embassy Suites.

It should be the biggest Operation Sierra Storm event. Officials estimate Tahoe will get $400,000 worth of television exposure.

“It’s been a home-grown event that’s expanded,” Weidinger said. “It’s really a great community-wide effort.”
