Weather may wreak havoc with road work

Road work along Highway 50 west of Zephyr Cove that limits traffic to one lane could be finished as early as December or as late as April depending on the weather.

The Nevada Department of Transportation is installing $2.6 million worth of support walls along the lakeside of the highway to replace rusting and broken ones. If winter hits hard and delays the project until spring, the road will remain one lane each way until spring, said Scott Magruder, NDOT spokesman.

“If there’s a lot of snow, we just can’t work,” Magruder said. “It was supposed to be completed by Oct. 15, but they had to make some design changes because of the amount of rock they found.”

Oct. 15 was a target date because it was the last day digging, drilling or moving of dirt is allowed to happen at the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The NDOT construction requires drilling into the bed of the highway, but the agency is exempt from the dirt-moving deadline because its project affects public safety and water quality.

Expect similar work to be done this spring along a two-mile section of Highway 50. Construction will begin near the Bourne Meadow and run east toward Zephyr Cove for about two miles, Magruder said. That project is estimated to cost $5.5 million.
