UPDATE: Chain requirements in effect on most Lake Tahoe area highways

Here’s the latest on road conditions in the Tahoe region.

UPDATE 6:50 P.M.

Traffic holds on Interstate 80 have been lifted.

For eastbound traffic: Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all four Kingvale to Truckee.

For westbound traffic: Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels from from Truckee to 3 miles east of Kingvale.

UPDATE 3:50 P.M.

Chain requirements are back in effect on many area highways.

California

U.S. 50

Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels from Twin Bridges to Meyers in El Dorado County.

 

Interstate 80

Traffic is being held in both directions. Eastbound traffic is being held at Kingvale due to a jackknifed big rig. Westbound traffic is being held at Truckee due to spinouts.

For eastbound traffic: Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all four Kingvale to Truckee.

For westbound traffic: Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels from from Truckee to 3 miles east of Kingvale.

California Route 89

Is closed from Emerald Bay State Park to D.L. Bliss State Park in El Dorado County due to snow. Motorists are advised to use an alternate route.

Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels from Picketts Junction in Alpine County to the El Dorado County line.

Nevada

Nevada Route 431 (Mt. Rose Highway)

Chains are required, all vehicles except four-wheel-drive with snow tires, from Nevada Route 28 to Thomas Creek Road.

 

UPDATE 12:15 P.M.

Chain requirements on most area highways have been lifted.

There currently are no restrictions on U.S. 50 in the Tahoe Basin.

Chain requirements have been lifted on Interstate 80, although trucks are still being screened.

Chain requirements have been lifted on Nevada Route 207 (Kingsbury Grade) and Route 28.

Chains are required, all vehicles except four-wheel-drive with snow tires, on Nevada Route 431 (Mt Rose Highway) from Slide Meadows to Mount Rose Ski Tahoe.

California Route 89 remains closed from Emerald Bay State Park to D.L. Bliss State Park in El Dorado County due to snow.  Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels from Picketts Junction in Alpine County to 2.7 miles south of the junction of U.S. 50 in El Dorado County.

UPDATE 9:15 A.M.

A traffic hold on Interstate 80 westbound has been lifted.

For eastbound traffic: Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels from Cisco to 7 miles east of Truckee

For westbound traffic: Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels from Truckee to 2.5 miles east of the junction of California Route 20

UPDATE 8:25 A.M.

A traffic hold on Nevada Route 431 (Mt Rose Highway) has been lifted. Chain requirements remain in place from Nevada Route 28 to Thomas Creek Road.

UPDATE 8:10 A.M.

The traffic hold on U.S. 50 at Echo Summit has been lifted. Chain requirements remain in place.

Traffic is now being held on Nevada Route 431 (Mt Rose Highway) from Slide Meadows to Mount Rose Ski Tahoe.

UPDATE 7:40 A.M.

U.S. 50

Traffic is being held from Echo Summit to Meyers due to avalanche control.

Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels from Twin Bridges to Meyers in El Dorado County.

Interstate 80

Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels from Nyak in Placer County to the Nevada state line.

Westbound traffic is being held at Truckee due to spin-outs.

Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels from Tahoe City to Squaw Valley Road.

Chains or snow tires are required from Squaw Valley Road to the junction of Interstate 80.

Chains or snow tires are required from Truckee to 11 miles north of Truckee.

Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels from 11 miles north of Truckee to Sierraville.

Nevada

Nevada Route 207 (Kingsbury Grade)

Chains are required, all vehicles except four-wheel-drive with snow tires, from U.S. 50 junction to the junction of Nevada Route 206 (Foothill Road).

Nevada Route 431 (Mt. Rose Highway)

Chains are required, all vehicles except four-wheel-drive with snow tires, from Nevada Route 28 to Thomas Creek Road.

Nevada Route 28

Chains are required, all vehicles except four-wheel-drive with snow tires, from U.S. 50 junction to Crystal Bay.

U.S. 50

Chains are required, all vehicles except four-wheel-drive with snow tires, from mile post 0.0 in Douglas County to mile post 7.6 in Carson City.
