Weekend storm litters road with accidents

As heavy snow began falling on the South Shore Sunday, predictably, the number of traffic accidents rose steadily.

The California Highway Patrol reported four serious traffic accidents Sunday, and the South Lake Tahoe Police reported 7. Only two involved substantial injury.

A pregnant woman from Ceres Calif., whose car went off the road near twin bridges at 2 p.m., was released from Barton Memorial Hospital after being treated for stomach pain.

At 4:21 a 24-year-old South Lake Tahoe woman lost control of her 1992 Honda and drifted into oncoming traffic and was struck in the side by an Isuzu Rodeo. Naomi Hibshman, who had a bloody nose and complained of a headache, was treated at Barton for a broken leg, and broken ribs.

The most dramatic accident Sunday was five car pile-up at 6 p.m. on Lake Tahoe Blvd. near Chevy’s Fresh Mex Restaurant. No one was injured in the accident.

“I’m really impressed,” CHP officer Steve Gwaltney said of the relatively small number of accidents. “We don’t want anyone hurt – we don’t want any wrecks period – but it could have been worse.”

Gwaltney also reported an off road accident Saturday involving two vehicle’s belong to federal government.

“Two department of forestry snowmobiles ran into each other,” Gwaltney said. “They were not seriously injured. It sounds funny but the paper work is probably a huge pain.”
