Lake Tahoe-based Weidinger Public Relations received seven awards, including four Silver Spikes and three Awards of Excellence at the Public Relations Society of America Sierra Nevada Chapter’s 17th annual Awards program last week.

The Silver Spike designation is the highest honor from the Chapter and recognizes outstanding achievement, far-reaching client results, and high standards for quality of work and ethics. A total of 11 Silver Spikes were presented to agencies, firms and businesses throughout the Sierra Nevada area for campaigns in the past year.

Weidinger PR struck Silver in the “Emergency/Crises Communications” category for its efforts on behalf of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority during the Angora Fire.

Working with the LTVA, Chamber of Commerce, business leaders, casinos, ski resorts, governmental agencies and community representatives, WPR provided a non-stop flow of responsible information in various formats to media about the fire and recovery efforts for victims, the community and the destination.

Judges’ comments included, “This demonstrates what great planning can achieve…clean, timely communications utilizing a variety of media tools.”

WPR and Vizion Group of Philadelphia, Pa. scored an ace for best “Ongoing Program” on behalf of the American Century Championship, the celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe sponsored by the LTVA, NBC Sports and American Century Investments.

In conjunction with overall marketing efforts, the PR component helped generate record attendance and over 2,500 media reports promoting the event and destination.

The third and fourth top honors came in the “Special Events and Observances” section for Operation Sierra Storm, a national meteorologists’ conference. Coverage for the Mammoth Mountain event included 126 live television reports and countless newspapers and online hits in the national media with its global warming theme. In addition, the region’s PRSA Student Society voted OSS the best overall campaign.

Two Awards of Excellence were also presented in the “Overall Campaign” category, one for the firm’s year-round PR programming with the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority.

WPR generated over $1.2 million of media coverage for South Shore (based on advertising equivalency: what the same editorial space would have cost if purchased as advertising), while reaching over 100 million in circulation and viewership.

The other designation was for The Golf the High Sierra Media Tour, an annual event that achieves national coverage for the Reno, Tahoe, Carson City/Valley and Graeagle areas.

WPR also received an Award of Excellence in the “Marketing Communications” section on behalf of Kirkwood Mountain Realty, a campaign that produced major media coverage in targeted markets and sales for real estate offerings at the resort.

“Most important are the results for our clients – our work positively impacted the bottom line,” said Phil Weidinger, principal. “We’re proud of the recognition since the awards were determined by public relations peers who understand what’s involved. (The Tucson, Ariz., PRSA chapter judged the entries.) I’m also proud of the entire WPR team for consistently superior work. It’s a great group.”
