Weight-loss workshop is offered

The University of Nevada, Reno Psychology Department and the Center for Nutrition and Metabolic Disorders are seeking participants for an ongoing free one-day weight-loss/weight- maintenance workshop. Participants will receive a workbook based on the workshop and will be entered in three raffles worth $50 each.

Workshops take place at the University’s Department of Psychology on Saturdays, once or twice per month from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Anyone who has completed six months of a formal weight loss program, including most medically supervised programs as well as commercial programs such as Weight Watchers, and is over 21 is eligible to participate.

The workshop is based on research on language and cognition. It is designed to help people address their uncomfortable feelings related to eating, self-image, self-monitoring and physical activity. Secondly, it strives to help people live more consistently with their own goals and values.

The Acceptance and Commitment Therapy approach has been shown to help people quit smoking, control their diabetes, and deal with chronic pain and has been recently featured in Oprah’s “O Magazine.”
