The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association is investigating the Whittell High School volleyball program for a possible practice violation.

Whittell High School Athletic Director Steve Maltase and a NIAA official have confirmed the investigation.

The alleged infraction reportedly occured in the week leading up to the Northern 2A League regional tournament at Whittell High School.

“Whittell High School allegedly held a girls’ volleyball scrimmage prior to the 2A Northern League tournament,” said Jay Beesemyer, an assistant director for the NIAA. “This is still being investigated, and a ruling from this office will be made at the conclusion of the fall sports season.”

Maltase said that the NIAA has been conducting interviews and taking statements from people about the purported infraction.

“It wasn’t anything deceitful,” Maltase said. “It’s not like he needed to that. The fact is you can’t do certain things without permission.”

Maltase said that second-year coach Tony Fathergill still had room on the season schedule to add a match prior to regionals.
