Whittell girls even record

Steve Yingling, Tribune sports editor

It didn’t take Whittell High Warriors long to put their first defeat girls’ basketball defeat behind them.

A day after losing to Yerington in their season opener, the Warriors rallied for a 45-36 nonleague victory at Smith Valley on Tuesday.

Smith Valley led 24-21 at halftime and increased its lead to six points in the third period, but a defensive switch helped turn the tide.

“We put on a full-court press and got a few turnovers,” said Whittell coach Tom Esposito.

Whittell senior Isabel Concha-Foley had 25 points and 17 rebounds, and freshman Emily Harris contributed six points.

The Warriors (1-1) will participate in the Live Oak tournament Thursday through Sunday.
