Heather O’Brien graduated with honors during ceremonies Dec. 4 from the Northern Nevada Fire and Rescue Academy. The academy is under the direction of the Fire Technology Department of Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno.

The daughter of Kevin and Sally O’Brien of Stateline, O’Brien was raised in the Stateline area, attended Douglas County schools and graduated from George Whittell High School in June 2003.

The academy’s graduating class consisted of 23 cadets of which O’Brien was one of only four participating women who tested for and were accepted into the program.

Graduation requirements involved more than 600 hours of intensive classroom and field training experience covering a wide variety of basic firefighting topics and specialized areas. They included wildlife fire, hazardous materials, vehicle extrication, rope and technical rescue.

During graduation ceremonies, O’Brien received special recognition as class valedictorian and presented a video production highlighting the academy’s work, which she had prepared while serving as class historian.

O’Brien’s future plans include further studies with the TMCC Fire Technology Department as she prepares to apply for admission into the paramedic/EMT program.
