Whittell High senior to receive first Upshaw scholarship
July 17, 2009
Whittell High School senior Nick Warner is the first recipient of the Gene Upshaw Scholarship Award for his accomplishments in academics and sports.
The award is named in honor of the late Upshaw, a longtime NFL Players Association executive director and 10-year participant in the ACC. Upshaw is also known for his Hall of Fame career with the Oakland Raiders.
“That’s pretty huge that I’m receiving the first one,” Warner said. “Since there have been Gene Upshaw tributes on all the pro jerseys this year, it’s kind of crazy that I’m receiving this scholarship. It’s going to impact me a lot.”
Warner, a Whittell student body president and standout in football and baseball, will be presented with a $2,000 scholarship by Upshaw’s widow, Terri, today at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.
“This is a dynamic, relevant way to memorialize Gene,” Terri said. “Leadership was one of Gene’s greatest attributes, and this is a tangible way to help deserving students reach their goals.”
