Whittell principal candidate turns down job; search continues

ZEPHYR COVE – The search for a new principal for Whittell High School in Zephyr Cove has been reopened after the selected candidate turned down the job, district officials said Tuesday.

Jason Zona, the principal of Pioneer High School in Carson City, was offered the position after interviewing with Douglas County School District officials on Thursday and meeting with teachers, staff, parents and students of the Zephyr Cove school.

Rich Alexander, human resources director for the district, said Zona has declined and the position has been reopened.

“That was really hard,” Alexander said.

The new principal will replace Sue Shannon, who will retire at the end of the school year.

Zona was a finalist for the position along with Jeffrey Ritchley, a principal from Coleville, Calif. Both candidates met with district officials Thursday before attending separate meet-and-greet sessions at Whittell High School.
