Whittell softball crushes Muckers

Special to the Tribune

Whittell High School softball squared off against Virginia City on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Lampe Park. The Lady Warriors came away with a crushing 16-2 victory over the Virginia City Muckers.

Virginia City managed to bring two runs across the plate in the first inning, but Whittell overcame their sluggish start, driving in six runs in the first inning and eight runs in the second inning. Pitchers Amanda Harris and Jessie Sayre kept Virginia City in check, striking out six batters while only allowing one hit, one hit batter and three walks.

The Warriors scoring was led by Emily Harris, who went 2 for 4 with two singles. Megan Miller, Brianna Brewer, Jessie Sayre, Amanda Harris, Kendall Ferris and Gianna Miller all chalked up hits and RBIs in the five-inning Warrior victory.

First year head varsity coach Dave Galicia was happy with the win, but was concerned with the slow start in the first inning.

“Once our pitcher Amanda Harris located the strike zone, she was able to effectively paint the corners and take control of the game,” she said. “Our defense had a lapse in their communication in the first inning, but then the veteran players corrected that and then our defense tightened up.”

Galicia has high expectations for his team, saying, “We have a good group of softball players this year and they’re lead by a solid group of veteran players. I fully expect that, once again, we will be in zone finals with a better-than-average chance to be in state finals.”

The Lady Warriors continue their season with a double header Saturday at Lampe Park against Sparks High School. The first game will begin at 11 a.m.
