HAWTHORNE, Nev. — The Whittell volleyball team is hanging onto the Div. 4 West League’s last playoff spot as the regular season comes to a close. The Warriors swept Mineral County 25-19, 25-13, 25-20 on Friday night to maintain a one-game lead for fourth place in the league standings.

Whittell (8-6, 7-5 IV West) delivered one of its best offensive performances of the season against the Serpents while rolling to its second straight victory. Outside hitter Tatum Libert and setter Kelsey Kjer were named co-players of the game — Libert had 20 kills and Kjer finished with 26 assists, both season highs.

Three days earlier, the Warriors snapped a two-game losing streak by beating Coleville in four sets 15-25, 25-10, 25-12, 25-21. Outside hitter Hannah Brunsman was named player of the game as Whittell notched a comeback win to take a match with playoff implications.

Last Saturday, Oct. 11, Whittell was swept on the road by league-leading Smith Valley. For the Bulldogs, the victory was their 13th straight overall and ninth league in a row.

Whittell returns to action Thursday at home against Excel Christian at 5 p.m. The Warriors play at Sage Ridge next Monday before concluding the regular season at home against Virginia City on Thursday, Oct. 30.
