ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. – After a tough morning loss to Silver Stage, the Whittell Warriors routed Rite of Passage 64-43 on Saturday night.

Austin Neil led Whittell with 19 points, with Garrett Bronken scoring 12 and Austin Buyak 10.

R.O.P. brought their junior varsity team, though they were physically the biggest team in the tournament. But after a slow start, the Warriors ran away with the game in the second half, that included an 11-4 fourth quarter.

“It was good to see we can go out there and control the tempo,” said head coach Matt Bryant. “We have a winning record (3-2) at this point and that’s the goal for the season.”

This Warriors finished the tournament 2-1, beating Sierra Lutheran on Friday night along with Saturday’s games. A pleasant surprise for the Warriors has been the resurgence of Buyak, who Bryant said started the season with a lot of rust after missing the past two years with injuries.

“The improvement I’ve seen out of Buyak is tremendous,” he said. “I think he can be an all-league player.”

Buyak had 51 points on the weekend, that included a 21 point showing against Sierra Lutheran and a 20 point game against Silver Stage.

The Warriors face Coleville on Tuesday, a team they lost to last weekend.
