WHS choir to sing National Anthem at A’s game

Whittell High School’s Black and White choir has been chosen to sing the National Anthem at an Oakland A’s game.

Under the direction of music teacher John Houghton, 28 students will sing the “Star Spangled Banner”, a cappella, at the Oakland Alameda Colosseum on May 16.

“It’s a very exciting opportunity,” Houghton said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sing in front of a crowd that size.”

Houghton has taken four other choirs, in past years, to sing at A’s games, but this is the first group chosen in three years.

“We haven’t done it since 1997,” Houghton said. “We sent them an audition tape and then we got the call.”

The WHS Booster Club is paying for transportation, but students are responsible for other costs.

“The boosters said they’d pay for the bus if the choir matched funds to pay for all the food,” Houghton said. “The kids did a barbecue and a car wash and they raised close to the amount the we need.”

The WHS Black and White choir is accepting monetary donations through May 15.
