Wildflower expert speaks at campfire
The Tahoe Heritage Foundation and the U.S. Forest Service, Lake Tahoe Basin, will sponsor a special campfire program on Wildflowers of the Tahoe Sierra at 8:30 p.m. July 11 at the Lake of the Sky Amphitheater. The event is free of charge and open to the community.
Author and photographer Laird Blackwell will present a colorful slide program highlighting photos from his books “Wildflowers of the Tahoe Sierra” and “Wildflowers of the Sierra Nevada and Central Valley.” His knowledge is comprehensive and deep, his program will not only inform, but will entertain and inspire everyone to truly know the flowers of the Tahoe Sierra.
Blackwell, who has a Ph.D. from Stanford University, has lived and studied in the Sierra Nevada for more than 20 years. He is professor and chairman of humanities at Sierra Nevada College, teaching courses in ecology, psychology, literature and mythology. He considers wildflowers to be nature’s poetry, and he uses poetry in his program to help people remember tidbits of information about some of the wildflowers. Blackwell will be available to sign his books.
