Howling winds, fast boats and keen competition marked the 21st Southern Crossing sponsored by the Tahoe Windjammers Yacht Club. This was the fastest running of the annual South Shore sailing race.

Twenty-four boats from all around Lake Tahoe started the race with 17 finishing. This year the attrition was largely due to broken parts and prudent skippers. Gale force winds caused blown up spinnakers and main sails, dangerous losses of control and lots of bruised and battered sailors.

Overall winner and winner of “A” Division was Gary Reelberger’s “Racer X.” Lynn Wright was the “B” Division winner with “Apres Ski.” This year the club sponsored a Non Spinaker or Cruiser class, which was won by “Kokopelli” owned by Carlos Chaussee. Wayne Bonde took third-place in a 70-year-old, wooden hulled schooner named “Cubuf,” in what was a close competition throughout the non spin fleet.
