Wise, 14, a good speller
March 6, 2006
David Wise, 14, an eighth-grade student at South Tahoe Middle School, won fourth-place in the 23rd annual California Central Valley Spelling Bee. The competition, sponsored by the Sacramento Bee, took place March 1 in Sacramento. David is the son of Fred and Cindy Wise of South Lake Tahoe.
David was one of 60 finalists culled from 200,000 eligible third-through eighth-grade students from Sacramento, Placer, Yolo, El Dorado, Solano, Sutter, Nevada, Yuba and Colusa counties. The top students from each school took a written test at the Sacramento Bee office in January, and the 60 students with the highest scores became eligible to compete in the oral competition.
“I was really happy to win fourth place. I qualified for the oral competition in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades and my goal was to get in the top 10 this year,” David said. “They will have to find someone else next year, since I won’t be eligible.”
David said that he studied “too many hours to count.” But, apparently he studied enough because he was able to spell such words as satchel, pacification, phyllo, quinquennially and iliocostalis to lock in fourth place.
