Woman faces sentencing today

Staff reports

The woman who pled guilty to concealing the birth of a child by dumping the full-term newborn in a casino restroom will be sentenced today in Douglas County District Court.

Christina Ramirez, 18, faces a maximum of one year in jail and $2,000 in fines.

Ramirez gave birth to a full-term male newborn in a second floor restroom at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe early May 7 before placing the baby in a plastic bag and dumping it in a sanitary napkin receptacle, according to police.

She was found on the bathroom floor by a housekeeping crew and told by the crew she couldn’t sleep there. The housekeepers found the baby at 7:15 a.m. Douglas County Sheriff’s Department investigators found Ramirez on a Harrah’s bus depot bench waiting for transportation back to Stockton, her home town.

She will appear before Douglas County District Court Judge David Gamble at 9 a.m. for sentencing.

An autopsy report by Washoe County Coroner’s Office found no criminal ties to the birth.

According to law enforcement in Douglas County and Stockton, Ramirez is a gang member belonging to the Pilgrim Street Gang, a Norte-o gang in Stockton that contains about 50 members and associates.
