Woman killed crossing street

Susan Wood

A South Lake Tahoe woman died Friday night after being struck by a motorist while she attempted to cross Lake Tahoe and Johnson boulevards.

Carolyn Hope Caditz, 58, was pronounced dead at Barton Memorial Hospital, where she was transported. The motorist who struck Caditz was identified as Arnulfo Jimenez of South Lake Tahoe. He was not arrested in the incident, which happened at 5:50 p.m. between Safeway and the Timber Cove Lodge.

According to a Safeway manager, traffic off the major thoroughfare was diverted between Johnson and Tallac Avenue. There’s no crosswalk at the Johnson and Lake Tahoe Boulevard intersection.

Caditz lived alone in a Spruce Avenue apartment complex. Neighborhood children described her as kind and playful.

“It’s really sad,” 10-year-old Sarah McAdams said Sunday, recalling how Caditz would throw a Frisbee, jump rope and spin the Hula Hoop with the kids in the apartment complex parking lot.

Caditz would also pass down her shoes to the children she befriended. McAdams, along with 10-year-old Brittany Stephens, wondered what would happen to the woman’s cat.

Neighbors learned about the woman’s death from the apartment’s manager, who was unavailable for comment Sunday night.

“She seemed like a pleasant lady. She pretty much kept to herself,” neighbor Dana Foister said.

Foister added Caditz didn’t work and took the bus for transport.

An investigation into the traffic accident is continuing. At this time, it is unknown whether alcohol was involved by either the victim or the motorist, who voluntarily agreed to be tested. Test results are pending.

Police officers are also checking the accuracy of witness accounts, which apparently vary about the direction of travel of the pedestrian. The Subaru driven by Jimenez was headed eastbound.
