Woman upgraded to satisfactory condition after shooting

The 43-year-old woman shot in her South Lake Tahoe home Jan. 24 was listed in satisfactory condition Sunday at Washoe Medical Center.

Lori Ranallette was shot in the head with a .357-caliber handgun by her estranged boyfriend, William Orourke, 36, who killed himself after wounding her.

Ranallette’s condition improved from serious to satisfactory late last week, according to hospital spokesman John Wheeler.

The gunshot wound rendered Ranallette unconscious. She awoke shortly after 9:30 p.m. to find Orourke dead on her living room floor and fled to a neighbor’s house.

South Lake Tahoe police arrived at the home on the 2700 block of Knox Avenue, at 9:41 p.m. Orourke was pronounced dead at the scene.

Orourke and Ranallette had an ongoing relationship which had become violent, according to Detective Martin Hewlett.

Orourke lived alone in a cabin across the street from Ranallette.

A neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, said he was pleased that Ranallette was stable, but hurt by Orourke’s death.

“I have just been numb all day,” he said. “They are both good people.”

The neighbor said he never saw any signs of violence between Orourke and Ranallette, and that he was shocked by what happened.

“I had no idea that could happen,” he said. “If I had known, I would have done anything to prevent it.”
